Quarter to Midnight Sun

I would have liked to see a midnight sun, but August is a little late for that, so I'll have to settle for an 11:45 PM sun. This is somewhere in the Baltic Sea. Couldn't see any land, just 360 degrees of sky meeting water with bright orange inbetween. I wouldn't call this a sunset. A sunset happens pretty quick. The sky stays looking like this for hours.

What time is it?

According to this clock, it’s 10:17 and 11:17. I’ve never seen this before. They don’t have two clocks showing different time zones, they have one clock with two hour hands. The earlier one with a Swedish flag, the later one with a Finnish flag. Since the ship just goes back and forth between Stockholm and Helsinki everyday you have to assume half the passengers are on one time zone and half on the other. Everything on the ship is denoted in both time zones, such as restaurant hours, arrival time, etc. I left Helsinki around 5 PM and arrived in Stockholm around 9 AM the next day. 16 hours to go less than 300 miles doesn’t sound so fast, but the Baltic Sea is very calm and I spent most of that time sleeping. There’s also a sauna onboard. There are two main ferry companies in the Baltic area. Silja is a bit fancier than Viking which is the one I was on. Since there’s no rail connection to western Europe, taking a ferry works out great….you can take your car with you too. A ticket for the ferry is about 40 euros, but getting a room is extra. If you travel in a group of 3 or 4 you can share a room. I wasn’t interested in sharing a tiny room with total strangers, so I got my own. Between the 3 beds in the room, I was able to piece together 1 set of sufficiently clean sheets.

Beware of Soot

Thanks for the heads up, but what exactly does this mean? Should I beware because it will make my clothes dirty? Will it make the ground slippery? Should I not inhale it? Is the guard dog named soot? Is soot an evil force that will lead to my eventual downfall? I didn’t even see any soot around. I know what it means when a sign says “beware of dog”, but no one has ever told me how to react when there is a potential threat of soot. I therefore present this sign with the “most ambiguous sign ever” award.

Self Portrait

They say that lighting is supposed to be behind the photographer. A more accurate statement is that lighting is supposed to be behind the camera. Because when you take a self portrait, the latter is much better advice than the former. I appear a bit dark, so just turn up your monitor’s brightness to compensate. In spite of the sunshine, it was pretty cold and windy on the top deck of the ferry. Nice views though.

Helsinki Skyline

Helsinki has a very nice atmosphere, especially on such a sunny and clear day. There’s not much of a skyline, but if you asked me what Helsinki looks like I would show you this picture. Plenty of shoreline, nice buildings, relatively flat, and of course the big church on a hill. This picture was taken with my phone as I was leaving on a ferry. The resolution is really good (2 megapixel), but this one, like most is a little blurry. My tip is take 3 pictures in a row and one will be good. The pictures in the other ferry posts are clearer and were also taken with the phone.
